In a significant push toward strengthening railway connectivity in Tripura, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury informed the State Legislative Assembly that the survey work for a proposed new railway line spanning the state has been successfully completed.
Replying to queries raised by MLAs Gopal Chandra Roy and Nirmal Biswas on Thursday, the minister stated that the proposed railway corridor, considered a second guideline for rail expansion in the state, will connect Dharmanagar–Kailashahar–Kamalpur–Khowai–Mohanpur–Agartala–Sonamura–Belonia –Sabroom.
The ambitious project, covering approximately 170 kilometers, has already had its Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared with an estimated cost of Rs.3,300 crore. The survey report has been submitted to the Indian Railway Board for further consideration.
Highlighting the state’s proactive approach, Sushanta Chowdhury said that both he and Chief Minister Manik Saha have met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss the project in detail. He added that the Chief Minister will once again take up the matter with the Centre to expedite the commencement of construction work.
Meanwhile, MLA Dipankar Sen urged the state government to introduce long-distance trains like Humsafar and Garib Rath from Sabroom. In response, the Transport Minister clarified that such decisions fall under the jurisdiction of the central railway ministry. He confirmed that the proposal submitted by Dipankar Sen has already been forwarded to the Union Railway Minister.
Providing an update on existing services, the minister noted that currently four DEMU trains operate between Sabroom and Agartala, while 13 express trains connect Tripura with other states, reflecting steady progress in rail connectivity.
The proposed railway corridor, if approved and implemented, is expected to significantly enhance intra-state connectivity, boost economic activities, and improve access to remote regions across Tripura.
