Manik Saha on Thursday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party would win the upcoming by-election to the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency scheduled for April 9.
The chief minister said the party had fielded Jwahar Chakraborty as its candidate, describing him as a long-time party worker with strong local connect. He said Chakraborty was known among the people of Dharmanagar, which the party considered an advantage in the election.
Saha said the BJP approached every election with seriousness and was preparing simultaneously for the bypoll as well as the elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). He added that the party would highlight development initiatives undertaken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi while reaching out to voters.
Referring to opposition parties, the chief minister said the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had already announced its candidate, while the Congress had fielded a nominee in the previous election. He indicated that the BJP did not expect significant challenges from the opposition in the constituency.
On local body elections, Saha said the party had performed well in the Village Committee (VC) polls. He noted that the government had initially proposed holding VC and TTAADC elections separately due to logistical concerns. He said the state had suggested conducting the elections after the monsoon season, which typically continues till August.
Saha added that the Supreme Court of India had sought clarification on the timing of the elections and that the matter was under consideration.
