Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, founder of Tipra Motha, has announced that a fresh case has been filed in the Supreme Court of India over the long-pending implementation of multiple laws passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. In a Facebook statement, Debbarma said that while political discussions on BJP- Tipra Motha alliance are intensifying, critical issues concerning indigenous rights remain unresolved. He pointed out that several important legislations passed by TTAADC over the years, including customary laws, land laws, and administrative rules have not been implemented despite being submitted to the State Government.
Documents attached to the petition reveal that a series of bills dating from 2007 to 2024 remain pending. These include civil service rules, trading regulations, village committee amendments, and crucial legislations like the TTAAD Land (Allotment and Use) Act, 2022 and multiple customary law bills. Many of these have undergone several rounds of clarification and communication, yet are still awaiting approval or action.
Debbarma expressed hope that the Supreme Court, which had earlier intervened in ensuring Village Council elections, will once again deliver justice and ensure implementation of these laws safeguarding tribal autonomy under the Sixth Schedule.
However, the development comes at a time when the political atmosphere in Tripura is witnessing a new turn ahead of the ADC elections. Questions are now being raised in political circles, “Is Maharaja Pradyot under pressure? Is there a new twist in ADC polls with a possible BJP–Motha alliance? What happened to the ‘No Compromise’ stand?”
Amid these speculations, a senior MLA of Tipra Motha Ranjit Debbarma has clarified that the confusion is now over, indicating that a new political equation is emerging in the TTAADC elections, potentially opening the door for an understanding or alliance between Motha and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
This dual development, legal action in the Supreme Court over tribal rights and evolving political equations ahead of ADC polls is likely to significantly reshape Tripura’s political landscape in the coming days.
