CPI (M) candidate Amitava Datta protests water-filled chair in SDM office by squatting on the ground

The CPI (M) candidate for Dharma Nagar constituency by-poll and senior leader of the party today strongly protested the treatment meted out to him in the office of SDM (Dharma Nagar) Debjani Chowdhury who is also the returning officer of the constituency. He had gone there at the head of a procession to file his nomination as CPI (M) candidate for the seat.

But when he entered the SDM’s chamber with his chief election agent and a few supporters he was offered a chair by the SDM Debjani Chowdhury. But to his amazement Amitava found the chair to be drenched and water-filled and strongly prortested this. As a mark of protest Amitava Datta and his supporters squatted on the ground. However, the SDM Debajani Chowdhury expressed her regrert over the issue said that she was not aware of the chair in front of her table being filled with water and requested Amitava Datta and his companions to sit on chairs which she had got wiped off by a staff member in her office. Amitava Datta also relented and took the cleaned chair and duly submitted his nomination.

Later speaking to media persons Amitava Datta said that he did not blame the SDM for the fiasco but the BJP supporters in her office. “These people do not even have a sense of basic political courtesy, otherwise they would not have tried to harass an opposition leader and candidate like this ; this is shameful” said Amitava Datta.
