Tripura assembly today passed a unanimous resolution to ask the state election commission to prepone the ADC election by a day-that is from scheduled 13th April to 12th April-to prevent a clash of the poll schedule with the new year religious festivals of tribal and Bengali Hindus . The issue came up in the form of an intervention in the matter by senior Congress MLA Sudip Roybarman who raised the issue at the zero hour and proposing that a resolution be passed by the assembly asking the state election commission to reschedule the ADC election so that tribal and Bengali Hindus can smoothly and peacefully celebrate their new-year religious festivals without worrying about voting in the ADC election. Sudip also suggested that the state election commission be asked to defer the declaration of results of the election to the counting and declaration of results of assembly elections to West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala because earlier declaration of ADC poll results may impact the polling process in these three states.

Sudip’s proposal was supported by the leader of the opposition Jiten Chowdhury, IPFT minister Shukla Charan Noatia and ‘Tipra Motha’ MLA Ranjit Debbarma . At this stage the minister for parliamentary affairs Ratan Lal Nath stood up and said that the proposal should be supported by all political parties . The chief minister Dr Manik Saha intervened at this stage and said that the term of the ADC expires on April 18 and in case elections are not held on schedule a major vacuum in the ADC administration will be created as the legal and constitutional position on who will run the ADC after the expiry of term of the present council is not clear and has to be ascertained in consultation with constitutional experts. There is , otherwise a possibility of complications being created on this sensitive issue.

At this stage the ‘Tipra Motha’ MLA Chitta Ranjan Debbarma stood up and suggested that there will be no problem if elections are preponed and held on April 12 in stead of on April 13 and results may be declared later, after the festivals. Finally a unanimous resolution was passed by the state assembly requesting the state election commission to hold the ADC elections on April 12, in stead of on April 13 , as already notified . The copy of the resolution will be sent to the state election commission.
