Union Home Minister Amit Shah has urged an immediate enforcement of the three new criminal laws across the country. Addressing the 72nd plenary session of the North East Council (NEC) at Agartala’s Pragya Bhavan, Shah emphasized the need for clarity and preparedness before the laws are implemented.
To address this, he announced a high-level meeting with all Chief Ministers in Delhi this February. Ahead of this crucial meeting, Shah directed that the police chiefs of all North Eastern states convene in Delhi with officials from the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) and the Union Home Ministry. This pre-meeting aims to resolve outstanding concerns and finalize the groundwork for the new laws.
“These three laws will ensure that judicial processes are expedited, enabling all accused to be punished within three years,” Shah asserted, emphasizing the transformative potential of the legislation.
Highlighting the region's progress, Shah remarked, “The North East is experiencing peace, and this is the time to reshape the training and attitudes of the police to fast-track development in this harmonious environment.”
The plenary session also featured Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Schindia and Minister of State Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, who reiterated their commitment to advocating for the region in Delhi. Shah called on Governors, Chief Ministers, and Chief Secretaries of the North Eastern states to work collaboratively for the region's welfare. The session underscored the importance of coordinated efforts between the states and the Center to address developmental and judicial challenges, particularly in the context of the new criminal laws.
