Tension gripped the state capital on Wednesday as a protest march towards the Tripura Legislative Assembly turned violent, with Left leaders alleging a brutal police assault on senior leader and former minister Comrade Pabitra Kar.
The march, organized by Left parties, was part of a larger protest pressing for a 12-point charter of demands concerning farmers, jhum cultivators, and agricultural labourers. Protesters attempted to advance towards the Assembly but were stopped by security forces, leading to a heated confrontation.
According to eyewitnesses and party sources, the situation escalated quickly into a scuffle between protesters and police personnel. Senior Left leaders, including Pabitra Kar, were reportedly involved in intense pushing and jostling with the police.
Left parties have strongly condemned the incident, alleging that the police, acting under political pressure, resorted to excessive force. They claimed that former minister Pabitra Kar was physically assaulted during the clash. The leadership described the incident as a barbaric attack and accused the administration of suppressing democratic protest.
“The police acted like party cadres of the ruling BJP and attacked senior leaders without provocation,” alleged Left representatives at the site.
On the other hand, police sources indicated that the protesters tried to breach security barricades, forcing them to take necessary action to maintain law and order near the Assembly premises.
The protest was centered around key issues affecting rural communities, including fair prices for crops, protection of jhum cultivation rights, employment security for agricultural labourers, and other socio-economic demands outlined in the 12-point charter.
The incident has further intensified political tensions in Tripura, with the Left demanding accountability and action against the police personnel involved.
More details are awaited as both sides continue to trade accusations over the clash.
