1,245 Militants Surrender in Tripura Since April 2023, 147 Arms Deposited, No Fresh Insurgency Reported

In a significant boost to peace and stability in the state, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha informed the Tripura Legislative Assembly that a total of 1,245 militants from various banned outfits have surrendered since April 1, 2023, laying down 147 arms and rejoining mainstream society.

The information was shared in a written reply to a query raised by Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury during the Assembly session on Monday.According to the official data, the largest number of surrenders came from different factions of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT):

417 cadres from the NLFT (Biswa Mohan faction), including its self-styled chief Biswa Mohan Debbarma, surrendered

394 cadres from the NLFT (Parimal Debbarma faction) laid down arms

223 cadres from the NLFT (ORI faction) joined the peace process.

In addition, 220 militants from the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) also surrendered.

The surrendered militants handed over a total of 147 weapons, with the majority being locally manufactured firearms. The arms cache included:93 country-made guns, 13 AK-series rifles, 2 carbines, 6 .303 rifles, 4 Chinese rifles, 1 Chinese pistol, 1 CM Sten gun, 8 pistols and 4 revolvers, 8 single-barrel guns, 1 botamax device, 4 Chinese grenades and airguns.

The Chief Minister further stated that no new incidents of insurgent movement have been reported since the cut-off date mentioned in the Assembly query, indicating improved law and order conditions in the state.

The government clarified that under the resettlement agreement signed between the Government of India and militant outfits: All members of NLFT and ATTF must surrender arms and equipmentPossession of weapons after the agreement is illegal.Militants must abandon violence and secret activities.Armed operations must cease within one month of signing the pact.Cadres are required to uphold the Constitution of India and promote social harmony.

The agreement also strictly prohibits former militants from assisting, training, or supplying arms to any other insurgent groups in the future.
