Governor of Tripura Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Friday inaugurated the fourth Tripura Fish Festival at Agartala Children’s Park and urged fish farmers to adopt scientific practices to maximise production and benefits.
The festival, organised by the state fisheries department, aims to promote aquaculture and encourage greater participation in fish farming across Tripura.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor of Tripura said fish farmers should adopt modern and scientific cultivation methods to increase productivity and profitability. He also encouraged them to take part in national-level exhibitions and festivals to gain wider exposure.
Nallu stressed the need to facilitate training opportunities outside the state so that fish farmers can learn advanced aquaculture practices. He also called upon the fisheries department to ensure access to insurance coverage and institutional credit for fish farmers and fish-producing organisations.
“The department must prepare and implement proper plans to make the state self-reliant in fish production,” he said.
State Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das said the government has undertaken several initiatives to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production. He added that a state fisheries policy has been introduced to promote the sector.
Das said the government is also encouraging people, particularly youths, to take up fish farming as a means of livelihood and economic self-reliance.
Among others present at the programme were Dipak Majumder, MLA Meena Rani Sarkar, West Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil, Fisheries Secretary Deepa D Nair and Fisheries Director Santosh Das.
During the event, the Governor of Tripura felicitated several fish farmers for their achievements in aquaculture. He also visited different stalls at the festival and interacted with fish farmers and vendors participating in the exhibition.
