A 65-year-old man died at a hospital in Unakoti district after being taken into police custody late on Thursday night, with family members alleging that he was assaulted by police personnel during and after his arrest.

The deceased, identified as Monir Mia, a daily wage labourer from Deorachhara ADC village under the Gournagar block in Kailashahar, had been arrested in connection with a non-bailable warrant issued by a court for allegedly failing to provide maintenance to his divorced wife, family members said.

According to relatives, police from Kailashahar police station arrived at his residence around 2 am on Thursday night and took him into custody. The family alleged that police personnel misbehaved with them during the arrest and assaulted the elderly man while taking him to the police station.

They claimed that Monir Mia was in good health when he was taken from his house but was severely beaten in the police vehicle and at the police station.

Family members said they later received a phone call from police around 3 am informing them that Monir Mia had fallen ill and had been taken to Unakoti District Hospital. When relatives reached the hospital in the morning, they were informed that he had died.
