A brief spell of rain accompanied by gusty winds on Friday disrupted traffic movement and power supply in parts of Tripura’s Khowai district, with a key stretch of the Khowai–Agartala alternative National Highway-108B turning muddy and difficult to navigate, locals said.
Rain in the afternoon led to waterlogging and accumulation of mud on several portions of the under-construction highway, causing inconvenience to commuters travelling between Khowai and Agartala and other parts of the state.
Traffic movement was affected particularly along the stretch between Subal Singh and Belfang Bari, where several passenger buses, small vehicles and goods-laden trucks remained stranded for hours due to the slippery and damaged road surface, locals said.
Drivers said vehicles struggled to move through muddy patches, while some attempted to cross the affected sections with difficulty. In certain places, machinery deployed by the contractor was used to help vehicles that got stuck on the road.
The alternative National Highway-108B linking Khowai and Agartala has been under construction for nearly six years. Locals said a significant portion of the work remains incomplete and excavation at several stretches has worsened road conditions during rainfall, leading to slush and waterlogging.
Meanwhile, strong winds accompanying the rain disrupted electricity supply in Khowai town. Power supply remained suspended in most parts of the town from around 1 pm to 5 pm before normal services were restored, locals said.
