Tripura budget-2026-2027 to be placed on 16th March, Ram Pada Jamatya to be elected as new speaker on 18th

As per working of the assembly finalised by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) the budget for the financial year 2026-2027 will be placed by the finance minister Pranjit Singha Roy on next Monday , that is March 16 after the question hour of the day is over at 12-00 PM. The BAC meeting held today again under the stewardship of the acting speaker-actually the designated deputy speaker, Ram Prasad Paul-was attended by the leader of the opposition Jiten Chowdhury, ruling party chief whip Kalyani Roy , minister for parliamentary affairs Ratan Lal Nath and other members took a final decision on this. Alongside fixing the date of budget tabling in the assembly it was also decided that election or selection of the new speaker in place of late speaker Bishwabandhu Sen will take place on next Wednesday , that on March 18. The veteran BJP tribal MLA Rampada Jamatya has been unanimously chosen as the ruling party’s candidate for the post and is sure to be elected even if an election is pressed for by the opposition as the combined strength of the opposition CPI (M) and Congress in the house currently stands at merely 14 in the 60-member assembly.

Sources from the ruling party said that veteran Ram Pada Jamayta, a former officer of ONGC , has been chosen by the BJP high command on the basis of recommendations made by the state BJP party . He has been MLA for two consecutive terms since 2018 from the Bagama (ST) constituency and had earlier played a key role as secretary of the powerful Jamatya ‘Hoda’ (supreme community council of the Hindu Jamatya tribesmen) in its social fight against the NLFT militants . He is expected to be elected unopposed as the opposition lacks the strength to press for election or division of votes. The incumbent deputy speaker Ram Prasad Paul informed the party leadership much earlier of his unwillingness to become the speaker because of his preference for organisational work. Ram Pada Jamatya is going to be the only second tribal speaker of Tripura as earlier during 1978-1983 late Sudhannwa Debbarma was the first and so far only tribal speaker during the rule of the first left front government.

As for the budget for the new financial year (2026-2027) sources said that the upcoming budget will also leave an uncovered deficit though no new tax proposal will be placed for legislative approval as part of it . The chief minister has already indicated in a conversation with the media that the budget will be people and welfare oriented and certain new schemes will be announced though he did not spell out the nature of the new schemes. As usual the finance minister Pranjit Singharoy will read out the budget speech from 12-00 PM on next Monday giving the direction of the state’s economy and the priorities of the government in the next financial year. A new instalment of DA and DR for serving and retired employees is also likely in the course of the assembly session as the ADC election is just round the corner.
