The establishment of democratic governments through fresh elections in Bangladesh and Nepal has been widely welcomed as a positive development for India’s Northeast. Researchers, journalists, and representatives from the business community studying the region’s development highlighted this view during a high-level dialogue held in New Delhi today titled 'Advancing Indo-Pacific Priorities through Northeast-Focused Dialogue.'

Several speakers at the event emphasized that political stability and democratic governance in neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and Nepal could significantly strengthen regional cooperation, connectivity, and trade opportunities for the northeastern states of India.

During the programme, Jayant Singh, Chairman of the Land Port Authority of India, announced important developments for Tripura. He said that the long-awaited Maitri Bridge connecting Sabroom in Tripura with Ramgarh in Bangladesh will be opened very soon. He also informed that the Sabroom Integrated Check Post is set to become operational shortly, which is expected to significantly boost cross-border trade and connectivity. Efforts are also underway to expand border trade between Nepal, Bangladesh, and other northeastern states of India.

The event was organized as part of the US Strategic Framework for the Indo-Pacific: Northeastern Dialogue and was hosted at The Park Hotel on March 12, 2026. The programme was jointly organized by the US Embassy in India and the US Consulate General Kolkata in partnership with the Observer Research Foundation.

The dialogue highlighted the growing partnership between the United States and India in ensuring a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Speakers noted that India’s Northeast could align closely with American economic and strategic interests by expanding market access, strengthening resilient supply chains, and creating new opportunities for American businesses.

The New Delhi meeting marked the final event of an 18-month initiative funded by the US Consulate in Kolkata. The project focused on the US Strategic Framework for the Indo-Pacific and the role of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue in promoting trade, connectivity, security, and economic growth in India’s Northeast.

Earlier, six regional policy dialogues were held across northeastern states including Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur (virtually), followed by a national-level dialogue in Kolkata before the concluding session in New Delhi. In total, more than 230 stakeholders from government, business, academia, media, and civil society participated in these discussions. The consultations focused on identifying ways to integrate India’s Northeast into Indo-Pacific supply chains, trade corridors, and connectivity networks linked to the Quad.

From Tripura, two representatives from the business community participated in the dialogue: Anup Roy, Secretary of the Tripura Chamber of Commerce, and Tushar Chakraborty, President of the All Tripura Merchant Association.

Senior journalist and Editor Tripurainfo.com Jayanta Debnath, was also invited to attend the dialogue.

During the discussions, the representatives from Tripura highlighted the vast industrial development potential of the state and emphasized the urgent steps needed from the Government of India to accelerate economic growth and connectivity in the Northeast, particularly in Tripura.

Participants noted that stronger connectivity, improved trade infrastructure, and deeper regional cooperation could transform the Northeast into a key gateway linking India with Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
