A disturbing incident of alleged assault on a school teacher in Baijalbari under Khowai district has triggered widespread concern, raising questions about growing social intolerance and the safety and dignity of teachers.

The incident reportedly took place yesterday in front of the Mudibari Rangkhurbari Lower Basic School under Baijalbari police station under Khowai district. The victim has been identified as Bishwajit Roy, a teacher currently serving at a school in the Baijalbari area. He had earlier worked at Ratanpur Higher Secondary School.

According to police sources, on the day of the incident Roy had dropped his wife at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, from where she was scheduled to travel to Kolkata. However, after seeing a video circulating on social media showing an alleged attack on her husband, she reportedly decided not to board the flight and returned.

Reports indicate that while Roy was returning toward Khowai, an eleventh-grade girl student approached him near the Mudibari school and requested a lift to Khowai. The student was reportedly known to him as one of his students. At the moment when the student was getting into his vehicle, several local men and women allegedly gathered at the spot and accused the teacher of misconduct.

The crowd reportedly dragged Roy out of the vehicle and took him to the nearby school ground where he was allegedly assaulted. According to the statement given by the student to the police, when she attempted to clarify the situation and explain that she had requested the lift herself, she too was allegedly assaulted.

Police from Baijalbari police station reached the spot promptly after receiving information and brought the situation under control. Officer-in-Charge Jugal Tripura stated that if the police had not intervened in time, the teacher and the student could have faced more serious harm.

Both the teacher and the student were later taken for medical examination, police said. However, as of now, no written complaint has been filed either by Bishwajit Roy or by the student’s family.

Meanwhile, a video of the incident has gone viral on social media, sparking strong reactions among members of the teaching community and concerned citizens. Many are questioning why a teacher offering a ride to his own student should trigger such a violent reaction and whether there were other motives behind the attack.

Sources said that despite the alleged assault, teacher Bishwajit Roy has so far shown restraint and has not filed any case against the attackers. After the medical examination, both the teacher and the student reportedly left without lodging any complaint against each other.

The incident has raised broader concerns in society. Many observers are asking whether such attacks on teachers will go unpunished despite clear video evidence circulating online. Questions are also being raised about whether the state administration, the education department, and the teaching fraternity will demand justice in the matter. As teachers are often regarded as the backbone of the nation, many believe that a fair investigation and appropriate action are necessary to uphold the dignity of the profession and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
