A court in Tripura’s Khowai district on Tuesday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for beating a man to death in 2011 after he refused to withdraw a case related to the abduction of a minor girl.
The judgment was delivered by the Additional District and Sessions Court, Khowai, which found Shiranjoy Debbarma and Shivaji Debbarma guilty of murder based on witness testimonies and evidence presented during the trial. Another accused in the case, Samarjit Debbarma, remains absconding.
According to the prosecution, the case dates back to 2011 when a woman from Debendra Sardar Para under Teliamura police station lodged a complaint during the time of Garia Puja, alleging that three youths from Kalak Bishwachandra Para had abducted her minor daughter.
Police arrested the accused persons soon after the complaint was filed but they were later released on bail by the court. After securing bail, the accused allegedly began threatening the complainant’s brother to withdraw the case.
When the family refused to comply, the accused allegedly assaulted the man on October 2, 2011. The victim had left his house that evening to visit Dhuski market but did not return.
The following morning, villagers found him lying seriously injured beside a road near Moharcherra–Dhuski market. He was initially taken to Teliamura hospital and later referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Before his death, the victim reportedly told family members that the three accused had assaulted him through the night.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s sister on October 3, 2011, Teliamura police registered a case. The charge sheet was submitted on December 31, 2012. During the trial, Shiranjoy and Shivaji surrendered before the court, while Samarjit remained absconding.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of the convicts, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in case of default. Fourteen witnesses were examined during the trial.
