Tripura Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy on Tuesday virtually launched the pilot project ‘Nari Adalat’ in the state, an initiative of the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development aimed at strengthening community-level mechanisms to address issues affecting women.
The minister inaugurated the state-level International Women’s Day 2026 programme at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan here and said the project would initially be implemented in 10 gram panchayats across the state.
Addressing the gathering, Roy emphasised the importance of women’s empowerment through education and economic independence. He said an educated mother plays a crucial role in shaping the future of her children, while a self-reliant mother can guide them towards becoming independent and confident individuals.
The minister said families should encourage daughters not only to pursue conventional education but also to become self-reliant. According to him, creating an environment where women can live with dignity and earn respect in society should be a collective responsibility.
Roy said both the central and state governments are implementing several schemes aimed at improving the socio-economic condition of women. He noted that the number of women’s self-help groups and ‘Lakhpati Didis’ has been steadily increasing in Tripura, while women from the state are achieving success at national and international levels.
He also called for greater awareness to prevent social problems such as child marriage and maternal deaths caused by early pregnancies.
During the programme, Roy also virtually laid the foundation stone for a recreation centre for persons with disabilities at the premises of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department at Ujan Abhoynagar in Agartala.
Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Jayanti Debbarma and Tripura Women’s Commission chairperson Jharna Debbarma also addressed the event and urged people to actively work towards preventing child marriage and dowry practices.
Certificates of financial assistance amounting to Rs 50,000 each were distributed to beneficiaries under the Chief Minister’s Kanya Bibaha Yojana and the Chief Minister’s Balika Samriddhi Yojana. Several anganwadi workers, helpers and officials were also felicitated for their services.
