In an important intervention in the Rajya Sabha, Rajib Bhattacharjee highlighted the need to strengthen and empower the farmers cultivating Tripura’s famous Queen Pineapple, a globally recognized variety known for its unique taste, aroma, and quality.

Speaking in the Upper House of Parliament, the MP emphasized that a large number of tribal farmers in Tripura depend on pineapple cultivation for their livelihood. However, despite producing one of the finest pineapple varieties in India, many farmers still struggle to get fair prices and proper market access.

Rajib Bhattacharjee urged the central government to take concrete steps to help farmers benefit from the growing global demand for the fruit. He stressed the urgent need for establishing a dedicated Pineapple Park in Tripura, which would serve as a hub for processing, packaging, and value addition of the fruit.

The MP also underlined the importance of setting up modern cold storage facilities in the state. According to him, the absence of adequate storage infrastructure often forces farmers to sell their produce quickly at lower prices, resulting in financial losses. Cold storage facilities would help preserve the fruit for longer periods and stabilize market supply.

In addition, Rajib Bhattacharjee called for export incentives and logistical support so that Tripura’s pineapple growers can access international markets and secure better returns. Strengthening export channels, he said, would significantly improve the economic condition of thousands of farmers in the state.

During his speech, the MP also noted that in 2018 the President of India declared the Queen Pineapple as the State Fruit of Tripura, recognizing its importance to the state’s agriculture and identity.

Tripura’s Queen Pineapple, which has been cultivated in the region for more than two centuries, is known for its golden-yellow color, intense aroma, and exceptionally sweet taste. The fruit is also GI-tagged, indicating its unique geographical identity and quality.

Rich in Vitamin C, antioxidants, and bromelain, the pineapple is widely appreciated not only for its flavor but also for its health benefits. The crop plays a vital role in the agricultural economy of Tripura, with large-scale cultivation across different districts of the state.

By raising the issue in Parliament, Rajib Bhattacharjee has drawn national attention to the need for better infrastructure, fair pricing mechanisms, and export opportunities to ensure that Tripura’s pineapple farmers receive the benefits they deserve from this prized agricultural product.
