The Tripura Working Journalists Association has launched an organisational outreach programme across the state to strengthen its network among grassroots journalists. As part of this initiative, meetings were held on Sunday in Kailashahar and Dharmanagar with the participation of media representatives from North Tripura and Unakoti districts.

The meetings were attended by the President of the association, Bijoy Pal, and its Secretary Sunil Debnath. Journalists from various parts of the two districts participated in the discussions, where the leadership interacted directly with working reporters and correspondents at the field level.

During the meetings, the association sought to understand the real problems and challenges faced by journalists working in different parts of the state. Issues related to professional insecurity, lack of proper remuneration, and the difficulties faced while carrying out journalistic duties were discussed in detail. The leadership emphasized the importance of identifying the concerns of genuine journalists who are actively engaged in news gathering at the grassroots level.

Speaking to reporters in the evening after the meetings, President Bijoy Pal said that similar organisational meetings would soon be held in other districts of Tripura to bring together genuine journalists working across the state.

He expressed concern that the image of journalism in Tripura has been affected due to the activities of a few “broker journalists” operating mainly from the state capital. According to him, because of such elements, the credibility of the media fraternity is being undermined and many sincere journalists are forced to work under pressure and threats.

Pal also pointed out that many genuine journalists in the state are professionally vulnerable. On one hand, they often have to work for very low remuneration, and on the other hand they sometimes face social disrespect because of the actions of certain unprofessional individuals claiming to be journalists.

He further alleged that some self-styled journalist leaders are misusing the identity of journalism for political and financial gains, which is harming the reputation of the profession.

To restore the dignity and credibility of journalism in Tripura, the Tripura Working Journalists Association plans to unite genuine journalists from all parts of the state and launch a stronger collective movement in the coming days, Pal added.
