Ramchandraghat in Khowai district witnessed political tension after an alleged organized attack on the residence of a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader. The incident left BJYM president Rupak Ghosh and his elderly mother Meena Ghosh seriously injured. Rupak Ghosh has been admitted to GB Hospital in Agartala for treatment. His mother is admitted at Khowai hospital.
The incident has triggered sharp political reactions, with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing workers of the Tipra Motha Party of being behind the attack. However, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has strongly rejected the allegation, describing the accusation as pre-planned propaganda.
According to BJP sources, a group of miscreants allegedly attacked the house of Rupak Ghosh at Ramchandraghat, leading to a violent confrontation. CCTV footage of the incident has reportedly surfaced and is being examined by the police.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee strongly condemned the attack. They stated that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible for the assault and assured that the police would conduct a proper investigation.
The BJP has already lodged a written complaint with Khowai Police Station. Manoj Deb, representing the BJP’s Ramchandraghat Mandal unit, alleged that the attack was carried out to disrupt the party’s scheduled motorcycle rally on March 8. According to him, the rally had been announced earlier by Minister Bikash Debbarma and was expected to draw significant participation.
Manoj Deb further alleged that the attack was carried out with the backing of the opposition Tipra Motha Party and directly blamed party supporters for the incident.
Meanwhile, Tipra Motha MLA from Ramchandraghat constituency, Ranjit Debbarma, condemned the violence but rejected the BJP’s allegations. He claimed the incident occurred during a gathering at Rupak Ghosh’s house on the occasion of Holi, where local tribal youths had reportedly been invited.
According to Debbarma, a heated argument broke out when some youths were allegedly subjected to abusive and caste-related remarks. The situation then escalated, leading to the unfortunate clash. He also questioned how the attackers were being identified as Tipra Motha supporters, pointing out that none of them were carrying party flags or symbols.
The MLA emphasized that such incidents are undesirable and called for an impartial investigation into the matter.
Following the incident, police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. The administration said that an investigation is underway based on the complaint filed and the available CCTV footage, and appropriate legal action will be taken against those found guilty.
