A devastating fire broke out early Thursday morning at Nurpur Choumuhani Bazaar under Gournagar RD Block in Unakoti district, reducing at least nine shops to ashes and leaving several traders in distress just ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

According to local sources, the fire started around 5:30 am and quickly spread to adjacent shops within minutes. The blaze engulfed multiple establishments, including grocery stores, sweet shops, a pathology laboratory, and a motorcycle repair shop.

Traders affected by the incident claimed that each shop had goods worth approximately Rs.3 to Rs.4 lakh, leading to heavy financial losses. Many of them had stocked up their businesses in preparation for Ramadan, making the incident even more devastating for the local trading community.

Local residents initially tried to douse the flames, but the intensity of the fire made it impossible to control. Fire and Emergency Services personnel later arrived at the scene, but eyewitnesses alleged that mechanical problems with firefighting equipment caused delays in bringing the blaze under control.

Although a short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire, the exact reason behind the incident has not yet been confirmed.

Police from Kailashahar Police Station rushed to the spot after receiving the information and helped bring the situation under control. District administration officials also visited the affected market. District Magistrate officials assured the victims that the administration would stand by them during this difficult time.

However, the affected traders remain uncertain about adequate compensation and rehabilitation as they struggle to recover from the sudden loss of their livelihoods.
