Bus services on key routes connecting Khowai with Agartala, Kamalpur and Kailashahar remained suspended for several hours on Monday following an alleged assault on a bus driver and his assistant.
According to local sources, the crew of a passenger bus was attacked by unidentified persons on the Khowai-Kamalpur road. In protest against the incident, sections of transport operators halted services on the Khowai-Agartala, Agartala-Kamalpur and Kailashahar routes via Khowai from Monday morning.
The suspension, reportedly without prior notice, left many passengers stranded. Autorickshaws and private vehicles continued to ply on some stretches, with commuters alleging that fares were increased to between Rs 200 and Rs 300 per person for a one-way journey.
Passengers said they were compelled to pay higher fares due to urgent travel needs. Police officials said an investigation into the alleged assault has been initiated and appropriate action would be taken based on the findings.
