CM Calls for Greater Transparency at TLA Workshop on Responsibility and Accountability of Public Representatives

In a significant initiative aimed at strengthening democratic values, the Tripura Legislative Assembly organised a one-day workshop titled “Responsibility and Accountability of Public Representatives towards Citizens” at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized that democracy can only be strengthened when public representatives uphold transparency, accountability, and responsibility in their duties. He called upon elected representatives across all levels to work with integrity and remain answerable to the people.

The Chief Minister stated that public representatives must listen to citizens first and interact with them politely and respectfully. According to him, maintaining humility, accessibility, and a smiling approach while dealing with the public are essential qualities for those entrusted with democratic responsibilities.

This was the first conference of its kind in Tripura, guided by Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, bringing together public representatives from various tiers of governance. The event witnessed the presence of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, Tripura Governor N Indrasena Reddy, several MLAs and state ministers, and representatives from Jilaparishad, Municipality, Nagar Panchayats. Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury was not presentation he was in Delhi for Politborue meeting. But CPIM MLA Sudip Sarkar was readout his written speech where Shri Chowdhury was appreciated the initiative.

The event was organised by the Tripura Assembly support and guidance from Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) which is a premier international organization founded in 1911 that connects over 180 national, state, provincial, and territorial parliaments across the Commonwealth. It promotes democratic governance, rule of law, and parliamentary best practices through networking, training, and conferences. The workshop was made possible through the dedicated team efforts of Tripura Assembly and its Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Paul, Minister Ratanlal Nath and Chief whip Kallayani Ray. Representatives from different political parties appreciated the initiative and welcomed the move to institutionalize such discussions. The Chief Minister urged that this workshop be organized annually to ensure continuous reinforcement of democratic ethics and governance standards.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, who arrived in Agartala a day earlier to attend the event, expressed satisfaction at seeing a large number of representatives from all political parties participating together. In his address, he urged public representatives to work strictly in accordance with the Constitution and maintain transparency in public life. He stressed that sustained efforts of this nature would further strengthen the foundations of democracy.

Reaffirming the vision of building a “New Tripura,” the Chief Minister called upon representatives to rise above party lines and contribute collectively towards the state’s development. He said that for the younger generation to remember today’s leaders with respect, transparency, dedication, and accountability must remain their guiding principles.

Speakers at the event, including the Governor, MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Kriti Devi Singh, Minister Ratan Lal Nath, and Animesh Debbarma, echoed the sentiment of presenting a progressive and promising Tripura to future generations.

Participants at the one-day workshop expressed satisfaction over the initiative, terming it a timely and constructive step towards strengthening democratic governance and fostering closer ties between public representatives and citizens.
