The Supreme Court of India has directed the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) to file an affidavit clearly stating when the Village Council elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council will be held and why they cannot be conducted before the onset of the 2026 monsoon.

The Court indicated that an endeavour should be made to hold the Village Council elections in May 2026, prior to the monsoon.

The Tripura government has informed the Court that elections to the TTAADC Executive Council (District Council) are expected to be completed first by mid-April 2026, and that Village Council elections may be held thereafter, with a proposed timeline extending up to September 2026. The State Election Commission has stated that simultaneous elections are not feasible.

However, the Supreme Court observed that it does not find sufficient justification for deferring the Village Council elections till September 2026 and has sought a specific explanation.

The SEC has been directed to file its affidavit by 15 March 2026. The matter has been listed for further hearing on 18 March 2026.
