The Tripura government has provided 20,248 jobs over the past eight years, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Tuesday.
He made the statement while distributing appointment letters to 52 candidates selected for TFS Grade-I Fishery Officer posts at a function held at Pragya Bhavan here.
Saha said the government was providing employment in a transparent manner and that appointments were being made on merit. He stated that only qualified candidates were being selected for government posts and that there was no need for recommendations to secure jobs.
Referring to earlier years, the chief minister said that due to militancy and poor connectivity, it had been difficult to secure jobs in remote areas of the state. He said the situation had since improved, citing better law and order and enhanced connectivity. He also credited the Centre’s focus on development of the North Eastern region for improvements in infrastructure.
Addressing the newly appointed officers, Saha asked them to work responsibly and continue improving their professional skills. He said government employees should serve people who approach offices for assistance.
The chief minister said the state was also focusing on self-reliance alongside government recruitment. He noted that Tripura currently ranks second among North Eastern states in fish production and called for efforts to further improve performance in the sector.
He said the government had taken steps to boost fish production, including restoration of abandoned water bodies, excavation of new ponds and promotion of scientific fish farming.
Fisheries Minister Sudhanshu Das and Fisheries Department Secretary Deepa D. Nair were present at the programme, officials said.
