The receiving and flag-off ceremony of the renowned Kali Khasa rice was successfully conducted in the presence of farmers from the Kalajhari hill area and senior district officials, marking another significant step toward strengthening market linkages for Tripura’s indigenous aromatic rice.
The programme was attended by Ms Rimita Saha, IAS, Assistant Collector of Gomati District, Shri Utpal Das, BDO of Amarpur RD Block, Shri Samik Bhattacharjee, Superintendent of Agriculture, Amarpur and Smt. Suchitra Das, Chairperson of Amarpur Panchayat Samity. The event highlighted the growing institutional and administrative support for promoting Kali Khasa rice beyond state boundaries.
On the sidelines of the ceremony, Saurav Gupta, CEO of Sublime Gourmet Private Limited, Delhi held a one-to-one discussion with Shri Samik Bhattacharjee and Shri Supratim Chakma, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Gomati. During the interaction, he reaffirmed his commitment to procure more Kali Khasa paddy from the Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) of Gomati district under the Agriculture Department by the end of this month. The move is aimed at reinforcing forward market linkages and ensuring better price realization for farmers.
Saurav Gupta stated that his efforts to take Tripura’s Kali Khasa paddy and rice to global markets will continue with renewed momentum. He emphasized that the aromatic Kali Khasa rice is unique to Tripura and is not found anywhere else in the world, which gives it a strong competitive edge in both national and international markets. According to him, the rice has immense demand due to its distinctive fragrance and quality.
With the wholehearted cooperation of Amarpur BDO Shri Utpal Das, Gupta’s company procured 1100 kg of paddy at Rs.70 per kilogram directly from farmers in Amarpur for dispatch to Kolkata. He reiterated that such procurement initiatives will continue in the future to ensure sustained market access and income opportunities for local farmers.
The initiative is being viewed as a promising development for farmers of the Kalajhari hill area and Gomati district, as it connects traditional agricultural heritage with structured marketing channels, potentially paving the way for Kali Khasa rice to establish a strong presence in premium domestic and international markets.
Sourav Gupta told a Tripurainfo journalist that his company will purchase both Kali Khasa paddy and rice from the farmers of Tripura.
