The incumbent president of Bangladesh Md Shahabuddin (born December 10 1949) who had become the 22nd president of the Islamic republic in 2023 was consistently humiliated and ill-treated by the now-past illegitimate interim government of Bangladesh all through their one and half year tenure. As revealed in an interview with a leading print media outlet of the country, the chief advisor to the interim government Md Yunus never met him to brief him about foreign visits and discussions held there, as mandated by the constitution and they met only once in an official function.

Revealing his experiences of the one and half year period , Md Shahbuddin , a former freedom fighter , Awami League leader and a jurist-he was a district and session judge in his professional career-Shahabuddin said that from the very beginning the interim regime had taken a hostile stand against him . Within a month of the forcible seizure of power he had told an interviewer that he had received no letter of resignation from the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and all hell seemed break loose from that very moment. “I became a suspect even though I had only told the truth and there was an organised attempt to overrun the ‘Banga Bhawan’ (presidential palace) just like the ‘Gana Bhawan’ (prime minister’s official residence) had been done but during that time I got precious support from the BNP leadership and chiefs of three wings of the military who had not only reassured me of support but promised to oppose any attempt to subvert the constitution ; finally the armed forces foiled the attempt to overrun the ‘Banga Bhawan’.

During this stormy one and half year period when the country had descended to total chaos the president was humiliated at every step as two of his scheduled foreign trips to Kosovo and Qatar had been forcibly cancelled by the interim regime . “My photographs were removed from all Bangladeshi diplomatic missions abroad and I was not allowed even to visit the universities of the country as chancellor; my press wing in the presidential quarter had been made dysfunctional and all officers in the press wing had been withdrawn; that was truly a humiliating position as I was holding the highest constitutional office ; the BNP leaders and the service chiefs always supported me” said the seventy seven yearold president. He admitted that the thought of resigning had once flashed across his mind but he gave up the idea in the interest of the country and the constitution on the strength of support from the BNP and the three wings of the armed forces.
