BJP-Backed Faces Dominate 14-Member Tripura Bar Council Election, CPM Emerges as Second Preference Among Voters

The initial results of the 14-member Tripura Bar Council election have been officially declared, with candidates identified with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning the majority of seats. Out of the total 14 seats, BJP-backed faces secured seven seats, while candidates associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won four seats, the Congress secured two seats, and one Independent candidate was elected.
Although the Bar Council election was not conducted on official political party symbols or formal political affiliations, the personal identity and ideological leanings of the candidates were widely known within the legal fraternity. Observers noted that most of the prominent BJP faces emerged victorious, while CPM-affiliated candidates appeared to be the second preference among a large section of voters.

Ratan Datta – 230 votes, Arindam Bhattacharya – 222, Amar Debbarma – 180, Prasanta Sen Chowdhury – 123, Dilip Debnath – 113, Sudarshan Sharma (Dharmanagar) – 101, Pulak Saha – 91, Sishir Chakraborty – 90, Debaloy Bhattacharjee – 81, Pujan Biswas – 76, Sunirmal Deb (Kailasahar) – 67, Dipankar Sharma – 65, Nepal Majumdar – 21 and Kaushik Roy received – 20 votes.
The election process was conducted under the supervision of retired Tripura High Court Judge Justice SC Das, who acted as the Presiding Officer. The voting and counting process were reported to have been conducted peacefully and transparently.
The outcome is considered significant within Tripura’s legal community, as the Bar Council plays a vital role in regulating professional conduct, handling disciplinary matters, and implementing welfare measures for advocates across the state.
