As many as 237 voters joined the BJP at a public rally in Karbook ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and village committee elections, party leaders said on Thursday.
The new entrants, belonging to 80 families from areas under Shilachhari and Karbook blocks, joined the party during a meeting held at the Karbook weekly market, they said.
Former MP Rebati Tripura, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma and Gomati district BJP president Sabita Nag were present at the event.
Addressing the gathering, Nag said participation of youths and people from different sections reflected support for the party in the run-up to the council and village committee polls.
Rebati Tripura criticised Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, alleging lack of transparency in the utilisation of development funds under the autonomous council and raising questions over audit of expenditure.
Debbarma also criticised opposition parties, including the CPI(M) and Tipra Motha, and said the BJP would continue to strengthen its organisational base in tribal areas.
BJP youth leader Bipin Debbarma said the party would focus on welfare measures and employment-related issues if elected to power in the council and village bodies.
Party workers and supporters from different parts of the two blocks attended the programme. The BJP has stepped up outreach activities in tribal areas ahead of the local body elections.
