Even as the newly elected BNP prime minister Tarique Rahaman has already laid stress on restoration of law and order, end of mob justice and amity and harmony among people, the Islamists in the communal hellhole of Bangladesh backed by the Jamat-e-Islami has set in motion a process of rocking the BNP government’s boat. Besides trying to foment trouble over BNP MPs’ refusal to take oath on implementing the so-called July charter reforms, the Jamat backed Muslm goons and thugs seem to be planning to launch their fresh programme of Hindu hounding .

In a disgraceful incident in Bogra district town last night a Hindu businessman Sushil Chandra (48) for the cardinal offence of refusing to give Rs 500.00 to the Jamati extortionist keen celebrate their victory in the Bogra seat in the just-concluded election to the National Assembly in Bangladesh. Sushil Chandra was hacked to death within his business establishment in Bogra town. The cold-blooded killing sparked spontaneous protest from the minuscule minority Hindu community in the town with demand for arrest and punishment of the klller though the police authority have assured the protesters of action to bring the killers to justice.

Meanwhile, the newly elected prime minister Tarique Rahaman held his first cabinet meeting yesterday in which he outlined his priorities of putting the faltering economy of the country back on rails , restoring law and order and ending mob justice continuing in the country over the past one and half years of illegitimate interim government’s rule. This morning Tarique Zia met the three services chiefs including the army genera Wakar-uj-Jaman and thanked them for their role during the turbulent one and half year period. Tarique has also dropped a clear hint that bilateral relations with government of India will be put back in order and normalcy. But sources from Bangladesh said that the BNP will face challenge from the jamati demand for implementation of July charter reform proposals approved by 60% of voters in the election. The BNP is not keen on accepting the entire set of reform proposals and their elected MPs including a number of independents desisted from taking oath on implementing the charter of reforms. This is likely to be a flash-point for the new government.
