The Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital have introduced an autologous blood transfusion facility in their blood transfusion department, marking a significant step towards safer and more advanced patient care.

Under the new system, patients scheduled for elective surgeries can donate and store their own blood in advance, which is later transfused back to them when required. The collected blood is preserved following standard medical protocols to ensure safety and efficacy.

Health officials stated that the initiative will reduce dependence on external donors and substantially minimise risks associated with conventional transfusions. By using a patient’s own blood, the chances of transfusion-transmitted infections such as hepatitis and HIV are lowered, while risks of blood group mismatch, immune reactions and allergic complications are virtually eliminated. The service is also expected to prove beneficial during periods of blood shortage and enhance patient confidence in planned procedures.

However, authorities clarified that the facility may not be suitable for individuals with low haemoglobin levels or serious underlying conditions. It is also not designed for emergency cases and requires proper planning, infrastructure and trained personnel for timely collection and storage.

According to the health department, necessary equipment, protocols and training have been arranged, and the service will be made operational shortly. In a recent instance, Suman Baidya of Rishyamukh deposited blood at the AGMC blood bank for an upcoming surgery.
