Police in Tripura’s Khowai district have arrested a former “10,323” teacher on charges of sexually assaulting a minor boy, officials said on Monday.

The accused, identified as Dulal Shil, was taken into custody after allegedly evading arrest for several days. A complaint was lodged at Khowai police station on February 13, following which a case was registered under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

According to a police official, the survivor’s family approached the police with allegations of sexual abuse against the former teacher. “Based on the complaint, we registered a case and launched a search operation. The accused had gone into hiding but was subsequently traced and apprehended,” the official said.

Police did not disclose further details citing the sensitivity of the case and the need to protect the identity of the minor.

Following his arrest, Shil was produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody, police said. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and recording statements as part of the ongoing probe.

The arrest comes amid continuing scrutiny over cases involving retrenched “10,323” teachers in the state. Authorities said further legal action will follow based on the findings of the investigation.
