In a significant administrative development, the Government of Tripura has issued an official order removing Shri Gautam Sarkar, President of the West Tripura District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, from his post with immediate effect. The decision follows an inquiry conducted by the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission after allegations of misconduct and abuse of position were raised against him.

According to the order issued by the Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, the action was taken under the provisions of the Consumer Protection (Qualification for Appointment, Method of Recruitment, Procedure of Appointment, Term of Office, Resignation and Removal of the President and Members of the State Commission and District Commission) Rules, 2020.

The inquiry was initiated after written complaints were reportedly submitted by advocates and employees associated with the West Tripura District Consumer Commission. The complaints included specific allegations of misbehaviour and misuse of official authority.

Following preliminary scrutiny by the Government of Tripura, the matter was referred to the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for detailed investigation. The State Commission conducted the inquiry and later submitted its report to the government along with findings and observations on each charge.

As stated in the order, the inquiry report concluded that the charges levelled against Gautam Sarkar were found to be true. A copy of the inquiry report was provided to him, and he was given an opportunity to submit a written representation in his defence.

After examining the inquiry report, his written explanation, and related case records, the Government of Tripura concluded that the allegations of misbehaviour and abuse of position stood substantiated. Based on these findings, the government exercised its powers under Rule 8 of the 2020 Rules and ordered his removal from the office with immediate effect.

The order was issued by the Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Government of Tripura, and signed by Somit Lodh, Additional Secretary to the Government of Tripura.
