Tripura Working Journalists Association Forms New State Committee, Sunil Debnath and Bijay Paul in Forefront Again

The Tripura Working Journalists Association (TWJA), one of the prominent representative bodies of media professionals in the state, has officially constituted its new State Executive Committee for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 terms. The announcement was made following the Bi-ennial General Meeting held at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in Agartala on Saturday.

According to the official media communiqué issued by the association, the election process was conducted in accordance with Rule 40 and 54 of the amended constitution. The detailed election schedule had earlier been notified on January 12, 2026. After completion of the electoral process, the Returning Officer formally declared the names of the newly elected office bearers and executive members.

Bijoy Paul has been elected as the President of the association unopposed. Ashit Baran Ghosh and Pratap Banik were elected as Vice Presidents, also without contest. Sunil Debnath was elected as General Secretary unopposed.

Among other key appointments, Suman Mahalanabish and Meghdhan Deb secured positions of Assistant Secretaries through election, while Tanmoy Banik was elected as Office Secretary and Subhash Ghosh as Treasurer, both unopposed.

The newly formed executive committee also includes a wide representation of senior and active media professionals as Executive Members. Those elected include Ashim Das, Anupam Paul, Bhupal Chakraborty, Badal Chandra Das, Buddha Bhusan Dey Sarkar, Bishnu Pada Banik, Bhabatosh Ghosh, Debashis Datta, Mohd. Nurul Haque, Pijush Saha, Samanta Kr. Debbarman, Swapan Chandra Das, and Sudhu Das Baishnab, among others. Most members were elected unopposed, reflecting consensus within the association.

The formation of the new executive committee comes at a crucial time for the media fraternity in Tripura, as journalists face rapid changes in the media landscape, including the growing influence of digital platforms and evolving challenges related to press freedom, ethics, and professional welfare.

The newly elected leadership is expected to focus on strengthening unity among journalists across print, electronic, websites and digital media, while also addressing professional concerns and promoting responsible journalism in the state.
