Tripura Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Paul has said that although honest journalists often face criticism due to the actions of a few unethical individuals, the dignity and respect of truthful journalism remain intact in society and will continue in the future. He made these remarks while addressing a conference organized by the Tripura Working Journalists Association (TWJA).

The Bi-Ennial State Conference and Media Workshop, which began yesterday at the Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in Agartala, brought together journalists, media professionals, and invited guests to discuss the current challenges and responsibilities of the media. Along with Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Paul, Subal De, Editor of Syandan newspaper, attended the event as a special invited guest.

Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Ramprasad Paul stated that genuine political leaders never look down upon sincere journalists and that principled and ethical journalists continue to be respected by society. He expressed concern that truly ideal and committed journalists are now less visible in the forefront in Tripura, alleging that sections of the media have fallen under the control of unethical and irresponsible individuals.

The Deputy Speaker

claimed that some individuals misuse media platforms to defame honest officers, citizens and political leaders through conspiracies and sensational reporting. He further alleged that such elements engage in blackmail by demanding money and, if refused, attempt to tarnish reputations through fabricated stories published in newspapers or telecast on television channels.

Calling for an end to such practices, Ramprasad Paul said he had been compelled to publicly protest against what he described as blackmailing journalism in Tripura. He asserted that he would continue to raise his voice and, if necessary, launch movements in defence of truthful journalists and to protect the dignity of the profession.

While protesting against the unethical activities of certain individuals claiming to be journalists, he organized a road blockade in the capital yesterday and delivered a speech condemning what he described as blackmail carried out in the name of journalism.

However, he later expressed regret if his remarks during the protest unintentionally hurt genuine journalists. He stated that he was sorry and apologized to any sincere media professionals who may have felt offended.

He further clarified that his protest was directed only against unethical practices and individuals misusing journalism for personal gain, and not against the journalism community as a whole.

Reaffirming his stand, he emphasized that he has always supported honest and ethical journalism and will continue to stand in favor of truthful and responsible media practices.

In his speech, the Deputy Speaker emphasized the importance of ethical journalism, factual reporting, and responsible communication in maintaining public trust. He underlined the crucial role played by the media in shaping public opinion and strengthening democracy. He encouraged journalists to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and integrity while reporting on public issues.

The media workshop segment of the programme focused on enhancing journalistic skills and discussed contemporary challenges such as misinformation, digital transformation, and the pressure of fast-paced news cycles. Participants were encouraged to maintain journalistic standards while adapting to technological changes and evolving media platforms.

Several members of the journalists community participated in the session, making it an interactive platform for professional exchange and knowledge sharing. Organizers said the conference aims to create a constructive space to discuss policies, challenges, and future directions of journalism in Tripura.

The programme concluded with a collective call for unity among journalists and for collaborative efforts to ensure that the media continues to function as a responsible and constructive pillar of society.
