Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Saturday expressed optimism about the future of ties between India and Bangladesh, saying recent political developments in the neighbouring country were significant for Tripura due to its geographical proximity and long international border.

Reacting to the recent electoral developments in Bangladesh, Saha said the neighbouring country holds special importance for the region, citing historical and social linkages between the two sides. He noted that following the Partition, there was a large-scale population exchange and many families on both sides continue to maintain cross-border ties.

Saha also recalled Tripura’s role during Bangladesh’s Liberation War, when the state provided shelter to freedom fighters and refugees. He said a democratically elected government is accountable to the people and expressed hope that bilateral relations would improve under the new leadership.

“I hope the relationship between India and Bangladesh will strengthen in the coming days and both sides will benefit. It will be particularly beneficial for Tripura,” he said, adding that recent developments in Bangladesh were being closely monitored.

Debbarman, the supremo of the Tipra Motha Party, also voiced similar expectations, saying the new leadership in Bangladesh appeared keen to ensure inclusive governance. However, he cautioned that radicalisation in the neighbouring country could pose challenges for border states like Tripura.

He said the new government should safeguard the rights of minority communities, including Hindus, Buddhists and Christians, and uphold the country’s secular character. Debbarman also referred to the electoral success of leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh in certain constituencies, stating that concerns over extremism still persisted.

Both leaders underlined that stable and cooperative bilateral ties would be crucial for regional peace and development.
