Child marriage stopped in Sepahijala by admn and childline authority

Despite occasional raids by the police, general administration and childline authority, the scourge of child marriage continues to haunt the Muslim dominated Sepahijala district and same areas under Dharma Nagar subdivision of north Tripura. In an unseemly such incident a combined raid by the administration and childline , backed by police, a minor Muslim girl was rescued and sent for temporary stay in a childline home in Bisramganj area.
Sources said that on last Thursday night a minority family in Kadamtala village under Bisramganj police station under Bishalgarh subdivision had arranged to marry off their minor daughter, a student of class X only, with one Ibrahim Khalil (25) of Bardoal village under Sonamura subdivision. Even as the guests were being served meal in a specially built structure for the dinner party the DCM Bishalgarh Prasenjit Das who had been alerted by residents of the bride’s village appeared there with police and examined the official papers of the minor girl to convince themselves that she was actually a minor. At the directive of DCM Prasenjit Das , the police arrested the bridegroom Ibrahim Khalil and the father of the minor girl . Both were kept in Bisramganj police custody whlle the girl whose name the police did not disclose on legal ground was put up for temporary stay in a home run by the childline authority. Sources from Sepahijala said that such child marriages are common in the minority dominated district.
In a separate incident in Kadamtala area under Dharma Nagar subdivision the police and DCM Tanujit Saha of Dharma Nagar raided a house where a minor girl was to be married off but soon after seeing the police and administrative officer the guardians said that there was no marriage and the gril is a student of school. However DCM Tanujit Saha did not insist on submission of official papers and let go of the matter only by taking a written undertaking from the guardians of the girl that they would not marry their daughter before she attains the legally marriageable age.
