A tragic incident from the Dhananagar under North Tripura District has raised serious questions about poverty, social support systems, and human trafficking concerns after a young father reportedly died by suicide following the alleged sale of his newborn child.

According to local reports, Rabindas Das (25), a resident of Lalchhara Colony under Dhananagar police station, was facing severe financial hardship. His wife recently gave birth to their third child at a local hospital. However, due to extreme economic distress and inability to meet medical and daily expenses, the family allegedly sold the newborn to a couple from Silchar for around Rs.1 lakh.

Sources said that after returning home from the hospital, tension within the family began to escalate. Relatives reportedly questioned the decision, leading to emotional distress for the father. Family members later stated that Rabindas had expressed regret and wanted to bring the child back, but social pressure and financial reality reportedly pushed him into deep mental trauma.

Late at night, he allegedly left home, and on Friday morning, local residents discovered his body. Police from Dhananagar station reached the spot and recovered the body, which was then sent to the district hospital for post-mortem examination.

During preliminary questioning, Rabindas’s wife reportedly admitted that financial pressure led them to hand over the child. Police have started investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged sale and are expected to examine whether any organised trafficking network or legal violation is involved. Authorities are also trying to trace the newborn and verify the details of the couple who allegedly received the child.

Neighbours said the family already had two children, a boy and a girl and had been struggling with poverty for a long time. The incident has triggered grief and anger among local residents, who are questioning how such desperation could push a family toward such extreme steps.

The case has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger social welfare outreach, mental health support, and stricter monitoring of illegal child transfers, especially in economically vulnerable communities.

Police investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected after official reports are released.
