Man sentenced to life term for killing mother in law

A District and Sessions Court on Friday handed down a life sentence to a man convicted of murdering his mother-in-law in 2022. Judge Gobinda Das, presiding over the Belonia court, found the accused, Satyajoy Tripura, guilty of the killing of Unati Reang.

In addition to the life term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict.

The prosecution’s case established that the homicide took place between 1:30 am and 2:00 am on September 29, 2022, at Ramsundar Para. Tripura, who was residing at his in-laws’ home at the time, strangled the victim while she slept. Police reports indicated that the assailant was in an intoxicated state during the commission of the crime, which fell under the jurisdiction of the Baikhora police station.

Following the incident, a case was registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code at the Baikhora Women Police Station. The subsequent investigation, led by Sub-Inspector Ruma Noatia, resulted in a chargesheet that listed 14 potential witnesses.

During the trial, Public Prosecutor Subrata Chakraborty represented the state. The court reached its verdict after examining the testimonies of 13 witnesses, concluding that the evidence corroborated the murder charges against Tripura.
