The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday directed the State Election Commission (SEC), Tripura, to clarify the timeline for completing the process of village committee elections following a fresh notification issued by the State government.
The order was passed by a Bench comprising Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Manmohan while hearing Writ Petition (Civil) No. 786/2025 filed by Pradyot Deb Burman against the Union of India and others.
Fresh Notification Rescinds Earlier Orders
During the hearing, the Court was informed that the State of Tripura, in its reply affidavit, placed on record a notification dated January 22, 2026 (Annexure R2). According to the notification, three earlier notifications have been rescinded.
As a consequence of the new notification, the proposed constitution of 123 new Village Committees, which were earlier to be formed through reorganisation of existing Village Committees, will no longer take place.
This development significantly alters the administrative framework earlier proposed by the State government.
Supreme Court Seeks Clear Timeline on Elections
Taking note of the changed circumstances, the Supreme Court observed that the State Election Commission must indicate a clear timeframe within which it can complete the exercise relating to the impending elections.
The Court further noted that the affidavit to be filed by the SEC may also indicate the possibility of holding elections simultaneously for the District Council and Village Committees.
Ranjeet Kumar, appearing for the State Election Commission, Tripura, sought two weeks’ time to file an affidavit addressing the Court’s observations. The Bench allowed the request.
Next Hearing on February 26.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on February 26, 2026.
The case assumes importance in the context of the proposed restructuring of Village Committees in Tripura and the conduct of elections to grassroots democratic bodies.
