Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Thursday clarified that the recent statement coming from a particular political leader pertaining to the Supreme Court’s decision on simultaneous polls in TTAADC was misleading.
Speaking to reporters after an event at The Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIFT), Dr Saha said, “So far I understand, the media reports related to simultaneous elections for the TTAADC and Village Committees under it were misleading. The way the facts had been presented creates an impression that a deliberate attempt was being made to mislead the people. So far I know, the Supreme Court hasn't passed any directions yet. The matter is still subjudice.”
According to the Chief Minister, the Supreme Court sought to know whether the state had any objections to conducting the polls simultaneously. “We shall file our response,” said Dr Saha.
The Chief Minister also added the delay in VC elections was not caused by the government alone. “The VC elections have been pending since 2016. So, our government couldn’t be held accountable unilaterally. Moreover, the TTAADC administration also has to admit the lapses from their end. They had proposed a list of 123 additional village committees and later withdrew the list,” he added.
It has to be noted here that Tipra Motha Party founder and Chairman of ADC Reforms Committee Prayot Kishore Debbarman on Wednesday claimed that the Supreme Court had directed the state election commission to conduct the polls in 28 general seats of the TTAADC and 587 Village Committees altogether.
“A huge victory for us as the Supreme Court today has directed the State election commission to conduct VC elections along with the TTAADC Elections simultaneously. 10 years later elections will be conducted at the VC level,” he wrote on his official social media handle.
