Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today reacted sharply to the recent incident of assault and counter-attack between two journalists in Udaipur, expressing clear dissatisfaction over the matter. Responding to a question from a journalist of a television channel in Agartala, the Chief Minister made a candid remark on the controversy.
“What can I say? The one who assaulted is also a journalist, and the one who was assaulted also claims to be a journalist. The problem lies within yourselves. First, journalist friends should look into the matter themselves. If journalists fight among themselves, what can society or the police do?” Dr. Saha stated.
The Chief Minister further stated, “It is not my concern which group or faction anyone belongs to.” He further added that despite the internal nature of the conflict, he has instructed the police to take action strictly according to the law. “I have already told the police that law will take its own course,” he assured.
The Chief Minister’s remarks, which surfaced on social media this afternoon, have sparked strong reactions among the public. Many citizens have questioned how the dignity and credibility of journalism in Tripura have declined due to the activities of some so-called new-age journalists.
Following yesterday’s incident in Udaipur, the Udaipur Press Club held a press conference today, raising serious allegations against the newspaper Pratibadi Kalam. The Press Club claimed that there are complaints of non-payment of wages after extracting work from journalists.
According to the President of Udaipur Press Club, Jasim Uddin, who was allegedly attacked, had earlier worked for the same newspaper. He accused the newspaper’s editor, Anal Roy Chowdhury, of making him work for a long period without paying his dues. Jasim Uddin is currently serving as the Secretary of Udaipur Press Club.
However, the Udaipur Press Club alleged that the Agartala Press Club, in its official statement on the incident, deliberately concealed these facts. They further claimed that the attack on Jasim Uddin was carried out by editor Anal Roy Chowdhury.
Despite these serious allegations being made publicly, the Agartala Press Club has not yet issued any counter-statement or clarification.
Officials of the Udaipur Press Club have appealed to all genuine journalists of Tripura to raise their voices against unethical practices within the profession. They warned that if such elements are not opposed collectively, journalism in Tripura will lose whatever social respect and credibility it still holds.
The incident has once again brought to light growing concerns about professionalism, ethics, and internal conflicts within the media fraternity of the state.
