The office bearers of Udaipur press club today strongly condemned the role of Agartala-based Editor of ‘Pratibadi Kalam’ Bengali daily Anal Roychowdhury and his accomplices in Udaipur court yesterday when Anal and his accomplices allegedly physically assaulted and injured a number of Udaipur based journalists besides breaking the motor bike of Udaipur press club secretary Jasim Uddin and snatching his mobile phone in front of security personnel. A press conference in this regard was held in the premises of Udaipur press club today.
Speaking in the press conference the president of Udaipur press club Debabrata Rudra first condemned the activities of Editor Anal Roychowdhury and his accomplices ‘masquerading as journalists’ who physically assaulted the journalists of Udaipur , broke Jasim Uddin’s motor bike and snatched away his mobile. “Anal Roychowdhury arrived in Udaipur court in connection with cases filed against him by our secretary Jasim Uddin and there he abused and ill-treated local journalists including Jasim Uddin and broke his motor bike by running it over with his car and snatched away his mobile set ; this happened after Jasim Uddin had rightfully rejected his pressure to withdraw the cases filed by him against Anal Roychowdhury; the local journalists who had been injured in the attack underwent treatment in Udaipur hospital and we have all records; we strongly condemn this and we have filed another case” said Debabrata Rudra.
It was then Jasim Uddin’s turn to speak to media and he also strongly condemned the ugly incident of attack and the attempts being made by Anal Roychowdhury to project himself as a victim. “ I worked for his newspaper for four years and got nothing as my due salary; in fact Anal has been doing this to all correspondents including those in Bishalgarh and Sonamura; when I asked for my salary he mistreated me and I was forced to file five consecutive cases against him in Udaipur court” said Jasim Uddin, quoting the number of cases. He then stated that Anal and his accomplices had arrived in Udaipur yesterday to secure bail for one of the cases and, seeing him in court premise along with other journalists, Anal had asked him to withdraw the cases . “But I flatly refused and said that unless I receive my accumulated pending salary of Rs 4.32 laks no case will be withdrawn and in response he and his accomplices abused and assaulted myself and other journalists present in the court with me ; he had also threatened me with dire consequences unless I withdraw the cases; our journalists sustained injuries in the attack and we had to undergo treatment in Udaipur hospital; all records are there with us” said Jasim Uddin.
He added that while leaving the court Anal’s car had deliberately pushed hard his motor cycle and severely damaged it besides his accomplices snatching his mobile set. “Anal never pays salary to the journalists appointed by him and he has been doing this since the beginning; we believe the constitution of our country and our democracy are still alive and it is my right to file court cases to have my grievances redressed ; I will continue fighting the cases I have filed and we the journalists of Udaipur will meet the DGP and honourable chief minister to expose the misdeeds of Anal Roychowdhury and how and why he has been doing this to journalists ; the are many pending cases filed against him by police and civil officers and political leaders ; we will fight to protect our rights” said Jasim Uddin.
