The Tripura government has strengthened measures to manage stray animals, including dogs and cattle, in compliance with directions issued by the Supreme Court in November 2025, officials said on Tuesday.
Deepa D Nair, Secretary of the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD), stated that the government is implementing coordinated steps to ensure public safety and animal welfare in line with the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023. The Supreme Court, in a suo motu writ petition, directed strict adherence to these rules, which mandate sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs at designated centres and their proper sheltering.
Local bodies, including municipal councils, have been assigned responsibility for executing the programme with support from the ARDD and registered animal welfare organisations. An ABC centre has been set up at Hapania by the Agartala Municipal Corporation, while a shelter is functioning at R K Nagar.
Officials said rapid response teams and helpline numbers are operational. Coordinated drives are targeting sensitive areas such as schools and hospitals. Stocks of anti-rabies vaccines are available in hospitals, and awareness campaigns are underway. Further expansion of infrastructure is planned for the next financial year.
