In a major breakthrough in the multi-crore Escap cough syrup seizure case at Agartala Railway Station yesterday, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested a courier service employee identified as Rakesh Husein.
According to police sources, Husein is a staff member of SS Courier Service, the agency allegedly linked to the transportation of the seized consignment. The police confirmed that he was taken into custody after preliminary investigations pointed towards his involvement in handling the illegal shipment.
Interestingly, the owner of the courier agency, identified as Ranjan Dutta Chowdhury, remains untraceable since the incident came to light. His office is reportedly located near the Grandiose Club at Maharajganj Bazar in Agartala, but investigators have not been able to contact him so far.
Police sources revealed that arrested employee Rakesh Husein is a retrenched teacher by profession. Prior to joining SS Courier Service, he had worked with Flipkart in the delivery section. He had reportedly joined the courier agency only a few days before the seizure took place.
Despite his arrest, no representative from the courier company has come forward to assist or enquire about him, which has raised further suspicion among investigators.
The investigating officers of Agartala Railway Police Station have already begun intensive interrogation of the accused to uncover the entire network behind the illegal consignment. Officials believe that more arrests are likely as the probe progresses.
The seizure of such a huge quantity of Escap syrup, which is often misused as an intoxicant, has once again highlighted the growing menace of drug trafficking through courier and railway routes in the state.
Further investigation is underway, and police are trying to track down the absconding courier agency owner to establish his role in the case.
