Tripura Industrial Development Corporation (TIDC) Chairman Nabadal Banik has expressed serious concern and strong resentment over repeated disruptions and criminal intimidation at the construction site of the new Industrial Estate at Nagichara under West Tripura District.
The new industrial estate is being developed on approximately 35 acres of land with an investment of around Rs 35 crore. However, ever since the project work began, a group of miscreants has allegedly been threatening the contractor and workers, demanding money and attempting to halt construction activities.
According to reports, despite several complaints being made, local police have failed to take effective action. The TIDC Chairman has personally informed the local Police, about the gravity of the situation.
It has been alleged that just three days ago, miscreants hurled crude bombs at the project site in an attempt to stop the ongoing work. Local sources claim that police rarely visit the area, which has further emboldened the troublemakers.
On receiving repeated complaints, today, Chairman Nabadal Banik rushed to Nagichara and urged the contractor’s staff not to suspend work despite the threats. He summoned local police officials to the spot and directed them to take immediate action and arrest those involved.
Sources revealed that since the beginning of the project a few months ago, a section of criminals has been demanding extortion money from the contractor, introducing themselves as members of Tipra Motha. A written complaint has already been lodged with the police against one individual, but no action has reportedly been taken so far.
Over the last few days, groups of 20 to 25 miscreants have been arriving at the site on motorcycles, repeatedly threatening workers and forcing them to stop construction. Even private security guards are reportedly unwilling to continue duty due to fear. Crude bomb attacks have allegedly taken place multiple times. The criminals have demanded that the contractor must meet them before resuming work.
After the bomb attack incident three days ago, TIDC Chairman Nabadal Banik visited the spot and issued strict instructions to the local police station to take tough action against the culprits and ensure uninterrupted progress of the industrial project.
The Chairman has made it clear that such unlawful activities will not be tolerated and that the government is determined to complete the industrial estate project on schedule for the development and employment generation in the state.
