False Rumours Trigger Road Blockade in Boxanagar, Protest Withdrawn After SDPO Promises Investigation

A tense situation unfolded in Boxanagar since today morning after a section of cannabis plantation workers and owners allegedly spread rumours claiming that Assam Rifles personnel had attacked innocent civilians. Acting on these claims, a group of locals staged a road blockade since 1.00 pm to 5.30 pm on the Boxanagar–Sonamura road, disrupting traffic for several hours.

According to reports, the agitation was sparked by misinformation circulated in the area following an anti-cannabis operation conducted earlier in the day. It has been alleged that those involved in illegal cannabis cultivation deliberately propagated that Assam Rifles jawans had assaulted local residents. Using this narrative, they mobilised people and blocked the main road in protest.

The blockade caused significant inconvenience, with vehicles and commuters stranded on both sides of the road. Tension prevailed in the area as protesters demanded action against the alleged attackers.

As the situation began to escalate, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) reached the spot in the evening and held discussions with the agitating crowd. The SDPO assured the residents that a proper and impartial investigation would be conducted to determine who, if anyone, had attacked local people.

Following this assurance, the protesters agreed to withdraw the blockade by evening, restoring normal traffic movement on the Boxanagar–Sonamura road.

While calm has returned for now, authorities are yet to issue any official statement regarding the incident. An inquiry is expected to begin soon to establish the facts and identify those responsible for spreading misinformation and creating unrest in the area.
