A major controversy has erupted in Badharghat area of the Agartala city after the operators of an animal shelter home filed a police complaint against two non-governmental organizations, POSHAM and K-9. The complaint was lodged on Saturday by Shanta Das and Nibedita Sengupta, who run an animal shelter at the residence of Sunil Chandra Das in Badharghat.
According to the complainants, members of the two NGOs carried out an unexpected raid at their shelter home on Friday. The operators have alleged that the NGO representatives entered their premises illegally and interfered with the functioning of the shelter without any official authority.
Speaking to the media, Nibedita Sengupta claimed that the actions of the NGOs were part of a deliberate conspiracy to shut down their animal care center. She alleged that the real intention behind the raid was to eliminate competition so that these organizations could dominate animal-related activities and services in Agartala city.
“The members of POSHAM and K-9 forcibly entered our animal shelter without any legal permission. They created unnecessary pressure and are trying to stop our operations. This is nothing but an attempt to establish monopoly business in the city,” Nibedita alleged.
Addressing questions regarding the legal status of their shelter, she admitted that their organization is currently not registered. However, she clarified that an application for registration has already been submitted. “It is true that we do not have registration at this moment, but the process is underway. We have applied for registration as a cooperative society NGO and expect to receive it very soon,” she said.
Shanta Das and Nibedita Sengupta have demanded strict action against the NGOs for allegedly trespassing into their property and harassing them. They have requested the police to conduct a proper investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, there has been no official response from POSHAM and K-9 regarding the allegations so far. Local police have confirmed that a case has been registered and that the matter is under investigation.
The incident has brought attention to the growing tensions among animal welfare groups in the city and raised questions about the need for clearer regulations and coordination in the sector.
