Teliamura PWD Projects Under Fire: Substandard Works Continue Amid Allegations of Political Compromise

Anger is mounting across Teliamura subdivision as allegations of large-scale irregularities and extremely poor-quality Public Works Department (PWD) construction continue to surface from different areas.

Local residents claim that due to lack of proper supervision, most rural roads, culverts and bridge projects executed by the Teliamura PWD office are being done with highly substandard materials. According to them, rampant commission culture has taken over the system, leaving no space for genuine quality control.

The ongoing construction of the small bridge over Sardu Karkari Chara, connecting Karilong village near Kalibari and Shibbari areas near Kamraj Maidan, has become the latest example of such negligence. The project began in 2021, but even after several years, only partial work has been completed. Villagers allege that the concrete pillars are weak, reinforcement rods are being used carelessly, and the overall technical planning is extremely poor.

Despite repeated complaints from local people, no corrective steps have been taken so far. Residents say the bridge is being built so narrow that even an auto-rickshaw will not be able to pass through it, defeating the very purpose of the project.

Amid this growing public frustration, serious allegations are now being raised against local MLA Kalyani Roy. A section of residents openly claim that due to her alleged negotiable mentality with contractors, quality has been compromised. Contractors are getting full freedom to do whatever they want, and common people are suffering,” alleged a local resident.

Another villager stated, “Roads break within months, bridges remain incomplete for years, yet nobody is held responsible. It is clear that a strong nexus is working behind the scenes.”

People also allege that Teliamura has become practically opposition-less, allowing government irregularities to continue unchecked. There are complaints that even some opposition leaders remain silent due to alleged understanding with contractors, leaving ordinary citizens with no platform to protest.

Civil society groups have now demanded an immediate social audit and departmental audit of all PWD projects undertaken in Teliamura in recent years. They are demanding:

Independent technical inspection of ongoing works and quality testing of construction materials.

Residents have appealed to higher authorities in the state government to intervene urgently. They warn that if such substandard work continues, public safety will be at risk and government funds will keep getting wasted.

For now, dissatisfaction among the people of Teliamura is growing stronger, and the demand for accountability and honest infrastructure development is becoming louder every day.
