Tripura’s veteran sports journalist and a former football referee and cricket umpire Tapan Chakraborty (73) breathed his last at home in Srinagar area near TV centre yesterday around 6-30 AM , plunging the world of sports journalist in the state in grief and mourning. He is survived by his wife, only son and daughter in law. Having completed his education Tapan Chakraborty, the founder president of Tripura Sports Journalists Association (TSJA) dedicated his time to sports field as a referee and then as an umpire in competitive matches under the Tripura Footaball Association (TFA) and Tripura Cricket Association (TCA).
With his abiding interest in sports Tapan Chakraborty had drifted towards sports journalism and joined the Daily Desher Katha newspaper in the year 1985 and till the last day of his life he remained with the newspaper as a sports journalist and editor. He was far above all kinds of parochialism and had good relations in all quarters . His sudden demise yesterday in the morning , presumably from a fatal cardiac arrest, came as a big shock to the media community and many senior journalists including the entire team of media persons from Daily Desher Katha rushed to his home in Srinagar area near TV centre. Later his moral remains were brought to Agartala Press Club and all senior members including president Pranab Sarkar, secretary Romakanta Dey , treasurer Ranjan Roy and many others paid their last tribute to him. Before that Tapan Chakraborty’s remains had been taken to his work-place , the office of Daily Desher Katha and all the journalists of the newspaper as well as the CPI (M) state secretary Jiten Chowdhury paid respects to him . Later on Tapan Chakraborty’s moral remains were consigned to flames in the Battala crematorium. His death marks the end of a glorious era of sports journalism in Tripura .
