Agartala city is set to witness a major administrative push to tackle its worsening traffic congestion and rampant footpath encroachment. The Agartala Municipal Corporation has decided to launch a special city-wide eviction and enforcement drive starting February 3.

The decision was announced today during a press conference held at the AMC conference hall by Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder in presence of Sri Subrata Bhattacharjee, Dy. Municipal Commissioner.

Addressing the media, the Mayor said that pedestrians in Agartala are facing severe inconvenience due to illegal occupation of footpaths by a section of hawkers and roadside vendors. He added that unregulated roadside parking has further aggravated traffic congestion across key areas of the city.

According to him, from February 3 onwards, the municipal corporation will conduct strict enforcement against footpath encroachment and unauthorised hawkers operating without valid licenses. Action will also be taken against vehicles parked illegally on roads instead of designated parking zones.

However, the Mayor refrained from commenting on several critical issues that have long concerned city residents. No clarification was offered on why many government offices including Agartala Municipal Corporation in the state capital lack adequate parking facilities. Similarly, he did not address the absence of proper parking arrangements at several hotels, restaurants, and marriage halls, which significantly contribute to roadside congestion.

The Mayor also remained silent on allegations regarding unscientific and poorly coordinated road and drain construction works under the Smart City project. Questions related to the slow pace and city-wide disruption caused by simultaneous Smart City works were left unanswered during the press conference.

Despite these unanswered concerns, the decision to initiate a firm crackdown on footpath encroachment and unlicensed hawkers has been widely welcomed by conscious citizens and urban planners. Many believe that if implemented fairly and consistently, the drive could help restore order, improve pedestrian safety, and bring much-needed discipline to Agartala’s traffic system.

From February 3, all eyes will be on how effectively the civic body executes the operation and whether it translates into lasting relief for the city’s residents.
